Their only solace comes from the sympathetic words of friends or even family members. However, clinical studies have proven that people suffering from heartbreak should seek professional psychological help. Tossing it aside, as most people would ask you to do, can have long-term psychological complications, like trust issues.

In this post, we will discuss why heartbreak isn’t something that can be ignored. It is a myth that the best way to get over heartbreak is to focus on something productive, like studies or professional work. But this kind of advice is usually given by those who have not been through a serious heartbreaking moment in their life. It is not just the loss of a romantic relationship that we are talking about here. Heartbreak can happen when you lose a dear one, or feel betrayed by someone you hold close to your heart.

According to studies, heartbreak causes the same kind of pain that a physical injury can cause you. The only difference is that the physical problem may go away after a time, but heartbreak lingers for days, weeks and months, even years. Small acts or thoughts trigger the avalanche of memories and cloud the mind over again. You will have to start the tough path to mental recovery all over again. Some psychologists are of the opinion that heartbreak activates the same kind of withdrawal syndromes that happens to people who are quitting narcotics, alcohol or smoking.

The sad part about mental issues is that unless you equate it with a physical analogy, people are unable to understand the gravity of the situation. While you may seek immediate help for a physical problem, a grave and serious problem as heartbreak lie untreated. Speak to a trained and professional psychologist before matters get murkier. You wouldn’t want to carry on with your life with the baggage of a relationship that is not there anymore. You can do better if seek closure to a painful past with the help and guidance of a professional psychologist.
